The 35th edition of the Festival International du Film sur l’Art (FIFA) will win over both seasoned movie fans and art lovers in general. From March 23 to April 2, FIFA is offering up a rich, eclectic range of grand films.

The selection committee whittled down a list of 900 submissions to 28 films in competition and over 100 others on the menu. Montreal’s only film festival devoted to creativity in all its forms showcases more than ever its originality and relevance. This selection explores the many expressions of art, from music to contemporary visual art, to cinema, comic books and dance.

Here’s a peek at FIFA’s must-see films screening at cinemas in the Quartier des spectacles.

Wim (Belgique – 2016)

In English, French, Spanish and Dutch; English subtitlies

This feature-length film in official competition about choreographer Wim Vandekeybus, founder of the company Ultima Vez, is directed by his sister, Lut. More than just homage to family and dance, it’s also a poetic reflection on the shifting border between life and creativity.

Mali Blues (GERMANY - 2016)

April 1 at 6 p.m.

A journey to the African roots of blues and jazz, this documentary in official competition offers up the opportunity to discover the rich musical heritage of Mali. Director Lutz Gregor follows internationally-known singer Fatouamata Diawara upon her return to her home country. Once there, she discovers a rich culture and passionate musicians for whom art is more important than war.

Luc Cousineau, homme des grands chemins (Canada – 2016)

Writer, composter and singer Luc Cousineau passed away earlier this year. By painting an intimate and captivating portrait of the late creator, director Nathalie Pelletier allows us to rediscover a multi-talented artist whose melodies were loved, and continue to be loved, by Quebecers.

Hergé à l’ombre de Tintin (France – 2016) +

Lucky Luke, la fabrique du Western européen (France – 2016)

Produced for the exposition “Hergé au Grand Palais de Paris”, Hughes Nancy’s film dissects the creative process of the author behind Tintin, from his early beginnings to the close of his career, when he felt like the success of his character had surpassed his own.

Following is a portrait of illustrator Morris by director Guillaume Podrovnik; this documentary demystifies the famous Lucky Luke, who doesn’t look his 70 years!

If you catch Strike A Pose (April 1, 6:15 p.m. at the BAnQ) then feel the urge to shake it out to Madonna’s endless catalogue of hits, here’s your chance! Professional celebrity impersonator Jimmy Moore and his dancers will pay homage to the Queen of Pop with a vibrant, energetic show. The party continues into the early hours with DJ Shaydakiss behind the turntables!
