A road movie starring the roads – 47 different ones, to be precise, set in California, the coast and the desert, before shifting further inland, eventually winding up in the south and Benning’s native Midwest… in not necessarily that exact progression. The shots are all fixed, which enables Benning to use digital compositing effects towards startling results. Like his earlier RR (2007), in which Benning uses stationary shots of trains to meditate on the socio-industrial evolution of the country, small roads is an ever-expanding monument to one of the unsung connective facets of modern life.
