A woman leaves a Buddhist monastery, finds a job and meets a man. They fall in love, then are separated. Will they get back together one day? You never see the faces of the protagonists in this very simple story. Their faces are those of the mass of pixelated people seen in surveillance camera videos, used as the sole source material for Dragonfly Eyes. An acclaimed contemporary artist, Xu Bing’s first film is characterized by a daring and fascinating formal approach. Edited from nearly 10,000 hours of surveillance footage, this conceptual essay is both distanced and stunningly sensual.
