Documentary cinema has often borne witness to the psychological devastation wreaked by armed conflict. But what happens when a war is endless, and the fearful wait for a death that never comes is a permanent, pervasive reality? Filmed in Nagorno-Karabakh, an Armenian enclave mired in a 20-year war with Azerbaijan, this latest from Pierre- Yves Vandeweerd (Retrospective RIDM 2016) bears the hallmarks of the director’s unique creative approach, bending the documentary form as a means of describing the indescribable. A wrenching poetic essay, Les éternels descends into the trenches, follows ghosts and zeroes in on people’s gaze to capture the eternal melancholy of those damned to live outside time.
