In 1946, Samuel E. Branch killed Bill Spann. It happened in Alabama. Spann was black. Branch was white - and he was the great-grandfather of filmmaker Travis Wilkerson, who decided to investigate his notorious ancestor, whose other descendants rarely mention the shameful episode. By returning to the scene of the crime and dusting o old home movies, Wilkerson invokes the terrifying spectre of the murderer – a symbol of racist America that endures to the present day no matter how deep the denial. Did You Wonder Who Fired the Gun? is a disturbing ghost story, a breathtaking horror movie about a buried past; but it’s also the urgently relevant portrait of a country where white supremacist groups are trying to breathe new life into a sordid legacy.
