March 6, 2007

Main text of post

Today, the Ville-Marie Borough Council approved the creation of a Special Planning Program (SPP)

for the Place des Arts area at the heart of the Quartier des spectacles. After three years of reflection, coordination and effort by the Partnership, this marks the consecration of the project by public authorities, and the beginning of the implementation of the Quartier des spectacles.

Clément Demers and the team of the Quartier International de Montréal have the mandate to analyze the ideas and projects that are on the table, and formulate overall development recommendations. The PPU will build on the tools that have already been put in place by the Partnership; namely, the vision document produced in 2004, the statement of planning criteria for the Place des Arts - Sainte-Catherine Street node and the study to ensure the permanent presence of festivals.

The announcement was made today during a press conference by Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay, accompanied by Benoit Labonté, Ville-Marie Borough Mayor and member of the executive committee responsible for Culture, Heritage, Downtown and Design, and by Charles Lapointe, President of the Quartier des spectacles Parternship board.
